Oofta…lies hurt!

An essay by Mom…

MEMO: Little white lies, big fat lies, and out and out untruths.

TO: America’s adult children.

Today someone mentioned there seems to be an epidemic of lying among adult children. No DUH!

“What have we done to make our kids hide the truth?” That’s the universal question of the new millennium.

Have we so interjected ourselves into every aspect of your life …we’ve painted you into a corner where it is safer to withold the truth? Is it because you feel you must keep some part of you to yourself…and instead of truth use lies as verbal barbed wire to keep us out of your new grown up world?

How many Babyboomer parents have smoothed the way for our kids by covering overdrafted checking accounts, unpaid bills or a pile of parking tickets?

When we love to much… we are accused of being helicopter parents. We then step backward and strive to be your unjudgmental peer. When these actions fail… we resort to the silent treatment or turn up the heat with a verbal lashing. Frankly we are tired of it and suspect you are too.

Hey we’ve told a few big ones in the day… and we still exagerate a bit. We understand how easy it is to say what somebody wants to hear. But as parents who dearly love you… we are telling the truth when we say we’d prefer hearing the truth. We love you no matter what…that is our job. We may be saddened by your mistakes–but we understand you are intitled to make them.

But please remember even the small white lies break hearts and the truth always wins out. It take a village to raise a kid and those villagers like to talk. It may take weeks or years but ultimately we learn what you have really been up to.

We heard you first cry. We saw your first step…and we continue to celebrate each giant step you take in today’s big and amazing world. You are old enough to hold down a job, pay rent …and get married. If it matters to you…if you want to earn our respect as a responsible adult then please start by telling us the truth.

With great love,

Your parents

PS if this freaks you out—just wait until you have your own adult kids. I know it will make sense then.

Oofta it’s 1812!

The Brits invade Duluth, Minnesota as part of Maritime History Festival. My daughter Jitterbug ran into a jolly good group of Brits! Oofta she had fun!

This post is not about watermellon pickles!

My post on watermellon pickles and libido brought in the most hits ever on my blog.  Oofta, now I know what all of you have been thinking!  This post—has nothing to do with pickles unless they are stored in the galley of a tall ship.

Thousands of Northlanders are expected to turn out on Thursday for the arrival of three tall ships in the Duluth, Minnesota harbor.  Lake Superior has brought us many wonderful things over the years….and this week, as part of  Maritime Heritage Festival we will have the chance to see the Niagra, Madeline and the Pride of Baltimore.

As a reporter and civilian I have traveled on several vessels, including a cruise ship and an iron ore carrier.  My husband also paddles a mean little canoe.  But I have always dreamed of sailing on a tall ship.  I’m trying to figure out how I can become a stow-a-way on the Baltimore.  My luck I would end up a cast-a-way on an uncharted island off the Northshore.  Oofta!

This week’s event in Duluth should be very exciting…as it also marks the 150th year of statehood for Minnesota.

Finnish Reindeer, Oofta!

FinnFest 2008.

I was afforded a great honor Friday night at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. While the President of Finland was inside listening to the Minnesota Orchestra…I was outside cleaning up after the Reindeer. Oofta it was messy but kinda fun in a stupid way.

Cute but messy!

OOfta! Rudy be careful!

The sport of mountain biking is picking up in popularity in the Northland…where fat tires rule the trail. Now a small group of local athletes are pushing themselves to the limits when it comes to handling their bikes.

Their talent goes well beyond the standard rock jump. This week in Duluth, Minnesota my daughter and I went for a walk on the city’s lakewalk along beautiful Lake Superior. We always enjoy our time together and we often see things that many people simply miss because they are busy burning off calories from dinner.

Click the picture below to see what you missed!

But some of us have learned if you stop and look around you there are gifts that can make you day…and you might be lucky to see people like Rudy defying gravity along the rocky shore.
