My Grandmother made a mean water melon pickle. Perhaps that is why Grandpa Fitz was always so happy!
Today on the news there was a report that the rind of watermelon can have a positive effect on a man’s libido. Kind of like the poor man’s viagra. Giggle. So in honor of this breaking news story today, I have found a recipe for watermelon pickles. No pun intended. This recipe comes courtesy of the Women of Harris, Minnesota Cook Book, circa 1950. This recipe could be blamed in part for the post war Baby boom.
Enjoy!

This cook book was compiled by Women’s Club of Harris, Minnesota and published in 1950. Hilma was my grandmother. Her bread recipe is amazing!
I think however, there is a “type O” in the white bread recipe. It tells us to scald and cool 1 cup of milk and then add 1 cup of water. I believe that should be milk rather than water. Any ideas? My Grandma passed away in 1985.
Auntie (Mrs. Joe) created the banana bread recipe it is wonderful as well.

This is a recipe from a cook book compiled by Women’s Club Harris, Minnesota 1950
It was my Grandma Hilma’s book and her bread recipe is in there too. Just thought I would share with you what the women of Harris were cooking up over 50 years ago! I would not suggest that you try this one at home. Unless you have a great partnership with your cardiovascular surgeon.
